ABOUT US
Welcome to Freeport-Merrick Rotary where helping our community far and near is our mission. At the end of the day if you have tried to make a difference to better the life of another you have done Service Above Self.
A Brief History of the Freeport-Merrick Rotary Club

The Freeport Rotary Club became officially chartered on November 27th, 1943 with 19 members at the Elks Clubhouse (currently the Elks Plaza). Nearly 200 Rotarians and guests from 16 Rotary Clubs on Long Island attended. A quote from one of the guest speakers, Halsey B Knapp, of Farmingdale: “The price of Rotary is a little time salvaged from the oceans of time men waste, and harnessed to a purpose not far removed from the Golden Rule”.
Over the years the club has embarked on many projects. In 1944, the club sent Overseas Letters to more than 200 Freeport servicemen on duty at active battlefronts, “a touch of home away from home”. In September, 1944, the Rotary club started something called the “work pile project”, which was a survey to help estimate the Village’s war needs and opportunities.
In 1947, The Freeport Rotary Club forwarded a resolution to the school board requesting that school gymnasiums be kept open during the Christmas and Easter holidays in an effort to curb juvenile delinquency.
Some of the more current projects are: sponsoring a Gift of Life child, making contributions to many non-profit organizations in the community such as Operation Pride, The Little League, the INN, Feed the Children, Thanksgiving turkey donations, Salvation Army bell ringing, and high school scholarships. The club is currently involved with a well project in a rural area of Haiti.
Over the years, the membership in the club has changed as some members moved away or passed on, with new members always stepping in to fill their shoes. On July 8, 2008, the Freeport club expanded its charter to include Merrick. Through the years, from 1943 to the present, the mission of the club has remained unchanged: to “provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders-Service Above Self”.

Jordan Pecora
Vice President
Jordan Pecora was born in Queens, NY and raised in Levittown, NY. From a young age, his father encouraged him to participate in various activities/sports such as archery, football, fishing and bowling. As a teenager, he became interested in coaching various sports including archery where he worked alongside his father at the PAL (Police Athletic League). Since that experience, Jordan learned how valuable it was to give back to community organizations and help others. He later joined We Connect the Dots, a non profit organization helping to connect underserved young people with STEAM education. As an Advisory Board Member, he participated in outreach with local and community leaders, researched governmental policies and sought out alternative sources of funding for the organization. Jordan graduated from Island Trees High School in Levittown, NY and then went on to receive his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Briarcliffe College in Marketing. He later attended Dowling College where he received his Master’s Degree in Corporate Finance. Jordan started his career as a public servant for the New York City Department of Education as a Cost Price Analyst and continued to advance his career in the public sector as a Contract Manager at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Jordan is currently employed at the New York City Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI) as the Director of Cost Recovery. He is also a Shop Steward for the Local 2627 union at OTI and enjoys helping his fellow union members resolve various issues through mediation. In the summer of 2020 during the global pandemic, Jordan was searching for additional opportunities to give back to his community and found the Freeport Merrick chapter of Rotary International. Jordan immediately felt welcomed into the Club and at that point he knew he wanted to make others feel the same way. He joined the club and took on the role of Membership Committee Chairperson to encourage other like minded individuals to participate in Rotary and teach them the values, mission and benefits of becoming a member. Since then, Jordan also became a Public Image committee member and is the incoming Vice President. Jordan is looking forward to continuing his support in all aspects of the club and ongoing membership outreach. Jordan enjoys history, political science, listening to podcasts, watching sports, yoga and spending time with his loving wife and 1 year old Havanese dog named Willow.
