In the summer of 2018, the Freeport Merrick Rotary club sponsored a water project in the coastal village of Anse Pirogue Haiti. The need for this water project was identified following a presentation to the club by a member who was in Haiti to provide support for a summer camp for deaf students. The
cost of purchasing potable water was the highest expense for the camp. The president of the Freeport Merrick Rotary club encouraged the club members to take on this water project that would not only provide water to the 200 residents of the village but also allow the camp to continue every year at that location. A well digging company was identified to perform the work. A contract was signed to dig a well at 170 feet. Water was found which was a positive outcome. However the water was brackish and not potable. The club is continuing its efforts to provide clean water to this community and is teaming up with another Rotary district in North Carolina to desalinate the water. Funds are needed to complete the next phase of the water project which will allow this community to have a sustainable source of clean water.

Water is life! By supporting the Haiti water project, you are helping a community to access sustainable means for their livelihood. Currently the residents walk 8 miles to reach a fountain where they can obtain potable water. Woman and children are assigned the task to fetch water in the community. As a result, they do not have enough time to perform meaning work to support their families. The children can only go to school after they have completed their shores. It causes great difficulties for those two groups in the community and curtail their ability to spend time working or studying.

In April 2020, the Freeport Merrick Rotary club joined with a member in the community to purchase 600 face shields that were distributed to hospitals and clinics in the community during the pandemic when there was an acute shortage of PPE.
The pandemic caused many members of the community to be food deprived. The club members decided to pull their resources together and contribute to 5 food pantries in the area to help them meet the needs for adequate nutrition of the people affected by the pandemic. Some food pantries elected to receive the funds to purchase the food. Others wanted the club members to purchase the food and deliver to them for distribution. It was a great project and many club members who participated felt rewarded for the opportunity to serve those in need.
